DOCTORAL SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS I
Director, Doctoral School of Economics I
Prof. Andreea Claudia ȘERBAN, PhD
The Faculty of Economics and Business Communication, which hosts the Doctoral School of Economics I, is the only faculty at ASE offering educational programmes in Economics as a fundamental science, presenting a holistic view of the theoretical-methodological and strategic-operational foundations of the integrated system of economic sciences.
Over the years, the doctoral field of Economics has developed under the influence of different doctrines and currents of economic thought. This is also reflected in the different names given to the field, such as Political Economy, General Economics or Economics. These variations are also found in the titles awarded, which have alternated between Doctor of Economic Sciences and Doctor of Economics. The shifts in the field's terminology and in the titles awarded mainly reflect a change of emphasis at both the theoretical-methodological and strategic-operational levels, mirroring the evolution of economic thinking in response to the challenges of the real economy and to accumulated practical experience and expertise.
Economic science harmoniously combines fundamental research based on explanatory models and relevant epistemic approaches with applied research that supports coherent and competent decisions at the micro, meso and macroeconomic levels. Accordingly, doctoral training and academic research in Economics within the Doctoral School of Economics I has been distinguished by promoting, on the one hand, the conceptual architecture of various economic theories and, on the other, the methods and means for applying economic knowledge in practice, mainly through the coherent design and implementation of economic strategies and policies.
The Faculty of Economics and Business Communication has been present, under various names, since the very first year of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies. Outstanding figures who contributed to an important chapter in the history of Romanian economic thought carried out remarkable teaching and research work here, among them Gheorghe Tașcă, Ion N. Angelescu, Virgil Madgearu and Gromoslav Mladenatz. This line of leading figures of the Romanian school of economics continued after the war, even in the difficult conditions of the time, with academicians Nicolae N. Constantinescu and Tudorel Postolache and professors Ion Blaga, Constantin Danciu, Nicolae Ivanciu-Văleanu and Niță Dobrotă.
As such, the Faculty of Economics and Business Communication has rich and diverse experience in training and developing specialists in economics, both professionally and in research. The Economics I doctoral programme prepares PhD students and supports them in carrying out complex, predominantly interdisciplinary research that draws on refined tools of economic analysis and, where appropriate, econometric modelling, in order to explain, assess and interpret the complexity and interdependencies between economic theories and policies.
